Acute Angle Glaucoma: Causes and Treatment

Glaucoma is thought be a dangerous eye disease that may take a worse form if not treated n time. The acute angle glaucoma disease occurs due to a sudden increased pressure inside the human eye. The symptoms of almost all kinds of glaucoma are almost the same. Redness in the eye and swelling makes it even more troublesome for the eyes. It is also called acute angle closure glaucoma or acute narrow angle glaucoma. The disease needs preventive and hygienic measurements for its cure. You must try to get it be cured by the doctor with full attention and without any lapse in this regard.

Though acute angle glaucoma may be affected in ten percent people but it is the most dangerous disease of glaucoma. It is thought that this type of glaucoma is a less usual type. It is very painful because there is sudden increase in pressure in the eye as the fluid does not cross the angle inside the eye. Acute glaucoma grows rapidly and its symptoms are easily noticeable. The treatment should be taken immediately; otherwise, the optic nerve inside the eye can be damaged. In this case, pressure rises inside the eye and makes your eye red and you cannot see the objects clearly. You also suffer from headache and may also lose your eye vision.

The signs of acute angle glaucoma are usually more terrible. The symptoms include swollen cornea, headache, redness of eye, eye pain and blots inside the eye, etc. If the angle closes suddenly, its symptoms are dangerous and dramatic. The intense form of glaucoma may be disturbed by the chronic open angle glaucoma where the angle closes gradually. The iris inside the eye is pressed or attracted against the trabecular meshwork at the angle of anterior chamber of eye. If the iris is pressed or attracted against the trabecular meshwork, the aqueous humor is stopped. People who do not have clear eyesight have shallow anterior chambers and narrow angles.

This acute angle glaucoma is caused due to two reasons:

  1. Iris pressed forward up against the trabecular meshwork.
  2. Iris attracted against the trabecular meshwork.

In both cases, normally the position of iris causes anterior chamber angle to close. The fluid that normally drains out is called aqueous humor and is trapped in the eye increasing the IOP. This type of situation demands an immediate action as things cannot be settled if the problem continues as the eye tissues and the optic nerve behind iris may get damaged due to it. A proper eye examination by a well-practiced optometrist is the need of the hour without any delay. If the situation is not handled on time, an irretrievable damage to the eye is sure.

Mostly, it is prevalent among people in their 60s and the chances of growing acute angle glaucoma increases with the increase in age. Diabetes can be helpful for the progress of glaucoma; therefore, the diabetics are advised to take full care of this problem.

The treatment process of this glaucoma is a peripheral iridectomy. It is a laser process and during this process aqueous humor moves easily to the drainage site. It can be controlled by proper treatment and the prospective damage to the optic nerve may be reverted.

So, acute angle glaucoma can be treated by the laser procedure, drops, intraocular surgery, and cataract surgery and vitrectomy procedures. You may take resort to any treatment procedure but the most important thing to be noticed in this regard is that the disease itself is dangerous and must be cured in time; otherwise, it can bring a lot of hazards in a person’s vision.
